The Decatur Main Street Program is an
economic development and physical improvement process designed
to benefit the historic central business district. The overall goal
is to bring and circulate commerce in downtown Decatur. Key
functions are aiding present businesses to be more successful,
improving the physical attractiveness of the downtown area, and
recruiting new business.
The Main Street Advisory Board has been appointed by the City
Council to oversee the project. The Main Street Manager, employed by
the City, coordinates the directives of the City and Main Street
Advisory Board.
A volunteer organization, the Main Street Advisory Board oversees
the program with committees focusing on Promotions, History,
Economic Restructuring, and Merchant issues. Now in it's 11th
year, the program is work in progress with many success stories to
tell and many yet to come.
The Main Street approach is a comprehensive process which initiates
positive steps to revitalize and maintain a healthy downtown
business district.
